Good for her! I'm glad she said something about it. Any woman who has battled postpartum depression can appreciate the help that the drugs that are available can be. My own struggle with the disease, while very different from Brooke's experience, was nonetheless real and painful. Therapy and a drug for depression helped me heal, deal and live life again more fully. I was able to go off of my drug, but just because someone needs to stay on it doesn't mean they are weak or addicted.
I agree with Brooke, if anything, maybe this will help shed more light on this disease that is still widely misunderstood and not treated or mistreated.
Do you watch The Daily Show with Jon Stewart? (You should!) Last night Lewis Black did his segmant Back in Black. It was a rant against all things medical. He ended by pounding Tom Cruise. IT WAS FREAKIN' HILARIOUS. He showed clips of Cruise with Matt Lauer finally ending with Cruise saying, "there is no such thing as a chemical imbalance." It immediately cut back to Black and he responded by saying, "No? Then explain to me what's happening to you right now!" It was comedic perfect timing!
I have not suffered with PPD (amazingly), but I have suffered depression off and on through out my life. One particularly severe case was resolved with the use of medication. I picked up a copy of Brooke's book, I read the WHOLE thing in two days. My prayers are with you. I'm boycotting all that is 'Cruise'...yuck!
